About BucketHat.au

Meet the team of outdoor enthusiasts behind Australia's trusted bucket hat resource

Our Story

BucketHat.au was born from a simple frustration: finding reliable, Australian-focused information about bucket hats was nearly impossible. As a group of friends who spend countless weekends fishing off the Queensland coast, hiking through the Blue Mountains, and surfing the beaches of Victoria, we know firsthand how essential proper sun protection is in our harsh Australian climate.

What started as casual conversations about which bucket hats actually held up during long days in the sun evolved into something more. We began systematically testing different hats, comparing brim widths, evaluating UPF ratings under real conditions, and assessing how various materials performed in everything from humid tropical heat to dry outback conditions. Our friends started asking for recommendations, then their friends, and we realised there was a genuine need for this information.

In early 2024, we launched BucketHat.au with a mission to become Australia's most trusted resource for bucket hat information. We're not a faceless corporation or a generic product listing site. We're a small team of Australians who genuinely use these products and understand the unique demands of our climate. When we talk about a hat's breathability during a summer bushwalk, we've experienced it ourselves on trails from Cradle Mountain to the Larapinta.

Our Testing Process

Every bucket hat we recommend has been personally tested by our team. We evaluate hats across multiple criteria that matter to Australian consumers: UPF protection verification, brim width and coverage angles, material breathability and moisture-wicking performance, durability through repeated washing and sun exposure, packability for travel, and fit across different head shapes.

We specifically test in Australian conditions because we know that a hat performing well in mild European summers might fail during a February heatwave in Melbourne. Our testing includes beach days, fishing trips, hiking expeditions, gardening sessions, and everyday urban wear. We track how hats hold their shape after being stuffed in backpacks, whether chin straps actually stay secure in coastal winds, and how quickly materials dry after unexpected rain or a dip in the ocean.

Our Commitment to You

We believe in complete transparency. When we recommend a product, we explain exactly why. When a popular hat has drawbacks, we tell you about them. Our guides are written to genuinely help you make informed decisions, not just to push products. Yes, we use affiliate links to support our work, but our recommendations are never influenced by commission rates. We've turned down partnerships with brands whose products didn't meet our standards.

Sun safety is serious in Australia. With some of the highest UV levels in the world, choosing the right hat isn't just about fashion—it's about protecting your health. That's why we take our role seriously. Every piece of content we publish is designed to help Australians make smarter choices about sun protection.
